Hypnosis is extremely effective because it doesn't rely on 'willpower'. Willpower doesn't really exist, it appears to exist when your subconscious mind agrees with your conscious mind.

When you choose to  'give something up' (as with willpower alone and some other stop-smoking methods), you often feel deprived. If you experience a stressful day, you may think to yourself, 'Why have I given up smoking when I enjoy it'

At such stressful moments your subconscious and conscious mind are at loggerheads and your resolve may weaken. However, your subconscious mind can manage your habits, desires and cravings independently from your conscious efforts. Whenever there is a conflict between your logical, rational conscious mind and your illogical, emotional, subconscious mind  -  your illogical emotional subconscious mind always wins!

 

Let me explain using a short case history (no real names used)

Mary, a forty-five year old married woman with three children was referred to me by a friend who came to me with a weight management problem (her friend "Catherine" had  lost 22 pounds before her daughter's wedding).

Mary had been afraid of spiders all of her life -  she avoided them like the plague - she had no idea why she was so afraid of them but the sight of even a small spider brought "terror to her heart" (Mary's words). So all her life she avoided them. Now they were moving into town and were living in temporary accommodation while they searched for a home in PV - the house was fantastic, one problem though -  regardless of what her husband did to remove them Mary would come across a spider in the kitchen, the utility, one of the bedrooms and particularly in the garage. Misery and terror were an everyday occurance - she even started waking up at night in a panic. They contemplated moving but for several reasons this was just not possible.

 

Mary so wanted to get things "sorted" she new that she should not be afraid of spiders, she could not provide her logical rational mind with a good reason for hating spiders so much. When the logical mind does not have a good reason for a behavior, it starts to feel anxious, as attempts to deal with the anxiety continue to fail, the anxiety soon turns into frustration, and the now severe frustration can in severe cases turn to depression.

 

At some point in Mary's past -  usually before the age of 16 years - the illogical thought that spiders are a real threat to Mary entered Mary's emotional, irrational subconscious mind. Once established, the illogical subconscious mind went about its protective duties by using that irrational thought to create behaviors that would protect Mary. So if Mary ever saw a picture of a spider it made her feel uncomfortable, and if she actually saw a spider it made her get as far away from it as quickly as possible. Her fears soon became her reality.

 

During  hypnosis I act as a guide - guiding the client to an amazing state of ultra deep relaxation. In this state the critical factor of the conscious mind is bypassed. This allows the client's subconscious mind to accept positive suggestions for change. The subconscious mind will only accept suggestions that are for the betterment of the client.

In Mary's case -  she so wanted to be able to accept spiders as non-threatening little creatures that posed her no threat - so you see this is an acceptable suggestion. All I had to do was ask the subconscious mind to change the behaviour associated with that old illogical thought for a new more beneficial behaviour.

 

After our ninety minute session Mary was first able to look at some photographs of spiders in a book and then at her request and after a bit of a search I located a small spider in my garage. Mary was eager to test her "change".... sitting in my recliner she smiled with amazment as she first looked at the spider in my hand and with a look of disbelief agreed  for it to be placed on her arm. For her the change in her feelings and behaviour in the presence of spiders was really confirmed when she allowed the spider to walk on her palm, dropped  off the edge and decended on a silver thread to the floor. No matter how many clients I have, the power of hypnosis never ceases to amaze me!

 

You see, Hypnosis works because it alters the way your subconscious feels, so it ultimately agrees with your conscious mind. 

Hypnosis 'reframes' how you feel about smoking so that you are no longer 'giving up' which implies losing something. Instead you appreciate how your fitness has improved, how good things taste and smell now that our senses are no longer being damaged by the chemicals you used to inhale. You will notice how your breathing becomes easier and how much more energy you have gained... not to mention the money you have saved!

 

Most people only need one session to completely kick the habit. My stop smoking programme runs over 60-90 minutes so it's fast and highly effective - in fact i have a 95% success rate.
